Gargoyle Gecko Caresheet

Background Information
Gargoyle geckos are a small to medium sized gecko, growing up to length of 10 inches. Native to New Caledonia, this tree dwelling gecko has the stunning ability of changing colour to match its surroundings. Making it very adapt to living a camoflaged lifestyle. Along with their blending in ways, this species is only active at night and should it come across a predator and get caught they can drop their tails as a last resort. Unlike other geckos that live on island, this species can grow back their prehensile tails. They are good climbers specially adapted webbed feet with grooves called lammalaes help them climb and grip onto trees and foliage with the additional help of their claws on the ends of their toes. The name gargoyle comes from the bumps onto of their heads. A soft skinned species which also eats fruit and nectar using their long tongues to reach for rottening fruit that has fallen from the tree tops.

Captive Requirements and Welfare
Gargoyle geckos are arguably the best handing gecko. Tolerate handling very well and although they can jump they don't spring themselves far. They need a tall vivarium covered in trees and plants to suit there camoflaging arboreal nature. They need to be sprayed 1-2 times daily to keep a high humidity of around 80% and to allow this species to drink. This species is one of the best handlers in the gecko family and also provide the enjoyment of them jumping from hand to hand something different that terrestrial geckos cannot provide. An equivalent commercial diet called Repashy Diet has be designed to give all the nutrients gargoyles need from a fruit diet. This comes as a powder which you mix with water into a ketchup consistency paste.
